Below is a checklist to go through before you start walking

  • Health - If you suffer from a heart or mobility condition check with your doctor to make sure that it is safe for you to start walking.
  • Equipment - A comfortable pair of shoes, boots or trainers will be adequate for most beginner walks.  You may also need some warm and waterproof clothing for when the weather isn't as good.
  • Plan - Where do you want to walk.  Ideally start from your own front door and a route near to you.  Local paths, trails and parks are ideal.  Ask around.  You might have seen other people walking locally and wondered where they go.  Check the weather before you go.  You may want to walk in mild weather to start with and need to be cautious about walking in very windy or cold conditions.
  • Ask other people to join you.  Make the walk a more sociable occasion by asking a friend, neighbour or family member along.  Its a chance to have a blether and catch up on what has been happing in each others lives.
